Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice William Maupin, in his State of the Judiciary address to the Legislature on March 7, went beyond simply detailing how Nevada's courts have kept their pledge to serve the citizens of the state fairly and efficiently.
Chief Justice Maupin told lawmakers that Nevada faces a series of crises related to the judicial system "that tax the fiber of our state's resolve, and its resources" including overcrowded prisons, the safety of foster care children, the malignant growth of addition to methamphetamine, overburdened courts, and outdated court facilities. He said that Nevada can overcome these problems if the Legislature and the Judiciary fulfill their "intertwined destinies" and "apply the considerable resources at our disposal" to ensure that Nevada can "continue in its role as the greatest place in this country to live, work and raise families." "As everyone in this room understands, the majesty of Nevada goes far beyond its mountains, its lakes, and wide expanses, Nevada's true majesty is found in the hearts of its people," Chief Justice Maupin stated in his evening address to a responsive audience at the Nevada Legislature. "Nevadans want to be able to prosper, they want to live here and contribute to our great state, and, ladies and gentlemen, we must create a safe environment for this to happen." Chief Justice Maupin called for:
"If we can keep faith with our shared destinies to attack these issues, we can and we will form a shared legacy that no one now living here will ever forget," the Chief Justice said.
