Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice William Maupin announced today that the Court is in the process of creating a blue ribbon commission to address procedures involving the preservation, public access, and sealing of court records. Chief Justice Maupin said the decision to create the Commission to Study Procedures for Preservation, Public Access and Sealing of Court Records was made during a meeting of the justicesTuesday in Las Vegas.
"The Commission will examine a number of issues involving access to court records and the need to balance public access with critical private interests," the Chief Justice said. "The Supreme Court, over last several years, created a number of commissions to study the court system and recommend ways to improve the way the Judicial Branch serves the needs of our citizens. Most recently we created the Article 6 Commission to take an unencumbered look at the way the Judiciary is structured." The Commission will be chaired by Second Judicial District Judge Brent Adams and the membership will include members of the media - Las Vegas media attorney Don Campbell among them - along with persons involved in the court system. Supreme Court Justice James Hardesty will be the liaison between the Commission and the high court. Chief Justice Maupin said the full list of members will be announced once it is set. Prior commissions have helped to restructure the rules of civil procedures and case management in the Family Courts. Other commissions already have studied the need for an intermediate appellate court, court funding, jury improvement, and rural courts.
