Supreme Court to Webcast July 1
Wednesday, 30 July 2008 13:26

The Nevada Supreme Court, recognizing the importance of its July 1 oral arguments on term limits on the state’,s future, will webcast the Carson City court session.

“,Webcasting the arguments will allow everyone with an interest in the proceedings to view the arguments, no matter where in the state they live,”, Chief Justice Mark Gibbons said.

The arguments can be accessed through the Supreme Court website www.nvsupremecourt.us. Arguments begin at 10 a.m. and are scheduled for one and a half hours.

Tuesday’,s arguments will focus on challenges to the filings for re-election by several incumbent politicians. At issue is when a constitutional amendment limiting politicians to 12 years in office went into effect.

Oral arguments scheduled for July 14, addressing the constitutionality of the amendment itself as well as ballot initiatives, also will be webcast.

Tuesday’,s webcast will be the second live broadcast of a Supreme Court argument over the Internet and, once again, will be made possible through the cooperation of the Legislative Council Bureau.

The first court webcast occurred June 13 when the justices heard arguments in Las Vegas on last minute ballot challenges, tax initiatives, and other matters that could affect the printing of ballots. The justices also conducted a triage session to address how to handle the term limits and ballot initiative cases –, deciding to hear arguments on some on July 1 and others on July 14.

“,We understand that many Nevadans have a great interest in the cases before the Supreme Court, but cannot attend the arguments in Carson City,”, Chief Justice Gibbons said. “,Webcasting lets the Supreme Court open its doors and provide access to the arguments to everyone, no matter where in the state they live.”,

The webcast will only be available during the live court session, and not archived on the court website. However, an audio file, or podcast, of the arguments will be posted on the website following the court session. The Supreme Court has routinely been posting audio files of all court arguments on its website.
