Historic Interviews First Step to Fill Family Court Seat

For the first time, the public will be allowed to directly address the Commission on Judicial Selection about the qualifications of the candidates who have applied to fill a Family Court vacancy in Clark County. Longtime District Judge Gerald Hardcastle retired on July 1.

The interviews on Tuesday, July 22 will be the first selection process open to the public since the Commission changed its rules in December.

The public has always been allowed to submit confidential comments in writing to the Commission –, and that continues –, but the new rules now allow anyone to personally talk to Commission members before interviews begin about the qualifications of candidates.

The Commission convenes at 8 a.m. on July 22 and will address several business matters before hearing the public comment. Interviews are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.

Eight attorneys have applied for appointment to the vacancy. Interview times, which are listed on the agenda, were assigned at random.

The Commission is scheduled to begin deliberations in public at 3:30 p.m. The Commission will select three finalists and send the names to Governor Jim Gibbons, who will make the appointment from the three names.

Along with opening the interview and deliberation process to the public, the Commission also permitted public access to most application information from candidates. A page for the Commission on Judicial Selection has been established on the Supreme Court website to provide the application information along with Commission rules, news releases, schedules, and other information.

A new addition to the webpage is a FACTS and F.A.Q.s document.
