ARTICLE 6 COMMISSION ISSUES FINAL REPORT

The Nevada Supreme Court’s Article 6 Commission, which was created in 2006 to take a broad look at matters affecting the Judiciary and make recommendations for improvements, has issued the final report of its work to this point.

The report summarizes the projects of the Commission and its Subcommittees during its first four years and details its achievements and aspirations.

Since it was established, the Commission, which is composed of private citizens as well as judges and attorneys, addressed a variety of issues, including:

Judicial discipline
  • Judicial performance evaluations
  • The jurisdiction and organization of the courts in Nevada Supreme Court
  • Campaign contributions and fundraising
  • The perception of the judicial system
  • Specialty Courts
  • Promoting openness in the filling of mid-term judicial vacancies
  • Merit selection of judges
  • An Intermediate Appellate Court for Nevada

The Article 6 Commission presently is co-chaired by William Dressel, President of the National Judicial College in Reno; and Paula C. Gentile, President M3 Nevada and MGMM Insurance Companies, and Senior Vice President and General Counsel for MGM Resorts International in Las Vegas.  Although the Supreme Court created the Commission, no justice sits as a member because many of the Commission’s recommendations come to the high court for action.  Justice Ron Parraguirre sits on the Commission as the Supreme Court liaison.

In light of the current budget conditions, it is not likely that the Commission will be taking on any new tasks in the immediate future, but the Commission stands ready to continue its work as the economy improves and as directed by the Supreme Court.
