“Increasing the number of mediators is vital to our goal of providing an efficient system for the thousands of homeowners in foreclosure and their lenders to resolve their mutual dilemma,” said Chief Justice Ron Parraguirre.

“With the number of cases we have, and the number we expect in the future, we must have sufficient mediators available for the workload,” he said.  “We will continue to add mediators as time and training allow.”

The new mediators were sworn in by Chief Justice Parraguirre during a videoconferenced ceremony on April 28, following training sessions conducted by the program in Clark and Washoe Counties.  The mediators primarily are Nevada attorneys, experienced mediators, or senior judges.

The Foreclosure Mediation Program, which began on July 1, 2009, initially operated with 95 mediators.

Training for the new mediators was conducted over two days as a prerequisite to their appointment by the Supreme Court.

Since the Nevada Foreclosure Mediation Program began on July 1, 2009, and through April 30, 2010:

  • 74,031 notices of default have been filed statewide.
  • 7,915 homeowners who received notices of default have requested mediation.
  • 2,635 mediations have been conducted.
