Under this program, retired judges and justices are assigned to assist in the district courts and the Nevada Supreme Court when the sitting judge is unavailable. The judges may be assigned to cover the court for a period of time when the sitting judge is absent because of illness or vacation, or for a specific case if all judges in the district have been disqualified. In addition, senior judges are assigned to the drug and specialty courts in the second and eighth judicial districts and in some of the rural courts, and to assist with the short trial and settlement program for parties without attorneys in divorce and custody actions. Currently there are 20 retired judges and justices who continue to serve the people of Nevada as senior judges.
