Nevada Supreme Court Justice Nancy Saitta has been chosen as one of 40 emerging state leaders for the prestigious Toll Fellowship Program sponsored by the Council of State Governments.

“To say I am honored is an understatement,” said Justice Saitta. “But this is not just a personal honor.  This is an opportunity to learn about the latest approaches to governance and use that knowledge to make the Nevada Judiciary even more efficient than it already is.”

Justice Saitta will join the other fellows at a seminar Sept. 12-17 in Lexington, Ky., that will focus on trends analysis, policy development, media and constituent relations, and leadership and institutional changes.  Justice Saitta is chair of the Supreme Court’s Judicial Public Information Committee.

“Nevada’s Judiciary already is one of the most accessible and transparent court systems in the nation,” she said.  “I am hoping to be able to bring home information that will keep our state on the forefront of judicial achievement.”

The seminar – named in honor of Henry Toll, a Colorado senator who founded the Counsel of State Governments in 1933 – offers the leaders perspectives they would not obtain during the course of their regular governmental service.

Justice Saitta was nominated for the fellowship by U.S. District Judge James Mahan and received endorsements from fellow Supreme Court Justices Mark Gibbons and Michael Cherry.

She was selected by a committee of state elected and appointed officials as one of the most promising leaders of state government.  This year’s applicant pool included state leaders from all three branches of government and represented 40 states and two U.S. territories.  Past Toll Fellowship graduates include governors, U.S. Senators, members of Congress, and leaders in state government.

The Council of State Governments is the premier multi-branch organization that focuses on forecasting policy trends for the community of states, commonwealths, and territories on a national and regional basis.  CSG also offers innovative state policy responses to rapidly changing conditions and advocates multi-state problem-solving to maximize resources and competitiveness.
