Former Judges Jack Lehman and Peter Breen Receive Supreme Court’s Legacy of Justice Award

The Nevada Supreme Court’s Legacy of Justice Award for 2010 is being presented to two former District Court judges for their pioneering work in establishing Nevada’s first two Drug Courts.

Former Eighth Judicial District Judge Jack Lehman started the nation’s fifth Drug Court in Clark County in 1992 and former Second Judicial District Judge Peter Breen established Washoe County’s first Drug Court a short time later.

The Supreme Court of Nevada has scheduled a bar admission ceremony for new lawyers at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2010.

The ceremony will be held in the Courtoom of the Nevada Supreme Court in Carson Ctiy.
New admittees participating in the admission ceremony must be present at least one-half hour before the ceremony begins and must check in with the Supreme Court Clerk prior to the ceremony. Representatives from the Clerk's Office will be in the Rotunda to collect oaths and take down the names of those participating in the ceremony. There will be special seating for the new lawyers apart from the general audience.

Successful applicants for the February 2010 bar examination are eligible to participate in the ceremony, provided that they have met all admission requirements. Applicants "on hold" have not met all requirements for admission and may not participate in the ceremony.
The Washoe County Bar Association will host a reception immediately following in the Supreme Court Rotunda.

Every year, our nation celebrates Law Day to mark our commitment to the justice system and the rule of law, but the Nevada Law Day 2010 events will include a new and interactive dimension.

The highlight will be Law Day Live, an interactive video forum linking Nevada’s four population centers – Clark, Washoe, and Elko Counties and Carson City – on an Internet broadcast that can be viewed throughout the state and even worldwide.

Grants Being Offered by AOC to Enhance Success of Foreclosure Mediation Program

Grants will be available from the Administrative Office of the Courts to help those going through the Nevada Foreclosure Mediation Program (FMP) better understand their rights, obligations, and options.

The Administrative Office of the Courts is responsible for administering the program on a daily basis. Funding for the FMP comes from recording fees on Notices of Default and Election to Sell when lenders begin the foreclosure process. Some of that funding will be used for the grants.

48 New Mediators Being Added to The Foreclosure Mediation Program

Forty-eight new mediators have added by the Nevada Foreclosure Mediation Program, with most being sworn-in by Supreme Court Chief Justice Ron Parraguirre during a March 22 videoconferenced ceremony in Carson City and Las Vegas.

The appointment of the new mediators, following training sessions conducted by the program in March in Clark and Washoe Counties, brings the total number of mediators to 218. The mediators primarily are Nevada attorneys, experienced mediators, or senior judges.

Supreme Court Justice Hardesty Honored By Public Interest Law Association

Nevada Supreme Court Justice James W. Hardesty was honored Friday, Feb. 26, by the Public Interest Law Association (PILA) of the William S. Boyd School of Law – the first individual to be honored in the 11-year history of the association’s fundraising event.

“Justice Hardesty was chosen as the first honoree because he embodies the spirit of public interest,” said PILA President Nick Portz. “We couldn’t pick a better suited candidate as our first honoree.”

Public Hearing Set on Rule Changes for Foreclosure Mediation Program

The Nevada Supreme Court will consider amendments to the rules governing the Nevada Foreclosure Mediation Program (FMP) at a public hearing on Tuesday, March 16, 2010.

"With the Foreclosure Mediation Program now in its eighth month of operation, we have determined that some additional rule changes are necessary to make the process more efficient and responsive, to benefit both the homeowner and the lender" said Chief Justice Ron Parraguirre.
